Trending tropic: The new brunch spot in Rabat

This weekend I tried the new hype place in town: El Tropic. I was so happy to discover this place, Rabat was missing some swag in this area compared to Casablanca and Marrakech. El Tropic is in the same building as the concept store Bee on 6th, the perfect Instagram friendly place. Lush tropical decor, all green tones, plants and light wood, cool staff and management and good music. Yes music is a buzz kill factor for me when I go out, it’s often too loud or too cheesy in most of the restaurants I tried in Rabat.

Decor and ambiance-wise it’s just perfect, even the cutlery, mugs and plates are cute and well thought. However…

We went there for a weekend brunch with friends. While everything was very delicious and well seasoned, the portions were way too small for me. I had a salmon version of Eggs Benedict and a mango lassi (with coconut milk and cardamom). Both extremely delicious but I was still really hungry, so I added a chocolate croissant (small version for 18dhs) and a latte. It’s on the pricey side compared to the local prices, Iv’e never had an 18dhs (2$) mini-croissant in Morocco even in up-scale places. We were offered a brownie to taste, it was really good and chewy but too sweet for me. I don’t eat refined sugar at all and my tastebuds are used to fruit sweetness, so I am very sensitive to sugar in pastries. If it’s too sweet it’s impossible for me to pass the sugar and appreciate the flavours.

It was a pleasant experience nonetheless. We felt so good that almost spent 3-4h in the place. Note that I am not your average breakfast eater, I eat a lot in the morning. it’s my main meal, and to be full in El Tropic I have to order three times more.

I would definitely come back, for Instagram pictures. Probably more for an afternoon tea break with my girls than for a brunch.
